Hellenes Northwest Testimonial

Katerina and Aegea Barclay have combined the talents of a mother and daughter to manifest their Hellenic heritage in the newly released children's picture book, The Hand Of Zeus. The book is the mythical story of the formation of Greece. Katerina and Aegea co-authored the story and mom Katerina created the beautiful colorful illustrations. As a recognition of their contribution to advancing our Hellenic Heritage, Katerina and Aegea were featured at the 5th Anniversary Celebration Dinner highlighting the Seattle area Greek community's partnership with the University of Washington in establishing the University of Washington Hellenic Studies Endowment Fund in 1999. The Hellenes of the Northwest hosted the party. Thus far approximately one half of the $1,000,000 goal has been achieved. The endowment will eventually support the Hellenic Studies program at the University of Washington. In the interim, additional funds have been donated to defray the current operating expenses of the Hellenic Studies Program that has had over 800 student participants the past 5 years. Donations to the Endowment and the operating expense fund have been made by many individuals, the local area AHEPA Chapters, the Onassis Foundation, the Government of Cyprus, and the Government of Greece.

During our Celebration dinner, Katerina and Aegea sold copies of their new book and generously donated all the proceeds to the Endowment Fund as a tribute to their Hellenic Heritage. As President of the Hellenes of the Northwest I want to thank Katerina and Aegea for their generosity and recognize their contribution to maintaining and keeping the Hellenic spirit alive in our local and national Hellenic community.

John T. John,
President, Hellenes of the Northwest
