THE HAND OF ZEUS BRINGS NEW MEANING TO GREEK HISTORY AND CULTURE

Seattle, WA-While geologists have unearthed scientific theories that support how the islands off the coast of Greece were formed, a mother and daughter team in Seattle, WA have come up with their own promising explanation that leaves scientific theory in the dust. In their enchanting new book, THE HAND OF ZEUS, Katerina Barclay and her daughter, Aegea reveal the "lost" mythology of why the country of Greece is formed in the shape of a hand and how the islands in the Aegean Sea were formed. Written by Katerina and Aegea and illustrated by Katerina, the duo gracefully weave a tale in the finest tradition of Greek legends.

Inspired by their Greek heritage and a desire to honor the gifts the Greeks have given the world, THE HAND OF ZEUS is a story of magic and love. Born from the charmed moment when a mother and daughter share a made-up story together, THE HAND OF ZEUS emerged over a five-year stretch of the imagination into the profoundly beautiful book it is today. A gathering of symbols and images from ancient and modern day Greece, THE HAND OF ZEUS offers a universal tale where good prevails against evil and the darker side of human nature cannot destroy what is fine and good about the world.

Illustrated in bold colors and rich tones, THE HAND OF ZEUS suggests the ancient traditions of Greek folklore nestled into the magical landscapes of Marc Chagall and the bold metallics used by Gustav Klimt. Based on original paintings by the artist, THE HAND OF ZEUS has the feel of an illuminated manuscript nurtured by the designs of a modern mosaic. Written for children of all ages, the new tale uses graceful language and lyrical writing to bring Greek culture to the forefront and transform the heritage and legacy of the Greek people into a new and fresh perspective.

In recognition of their contribution to advancing Hellenic heritage, Katerina and Aegea Barclay were featured at the Hellenes of the Northwest 5th Anniversary Celebration Dinner that highlights Seattle's Greek community's partnership with the University of Washington in establishing the University of Washington Hellenic Studies Endowment Fund. During the celebration, the two signed copies of THE HAND OF ZEUS and generously donated all proceeds to the Endowment Fund. "Their generosity and…contribution (helps keep) the Hellenic spirit alive in our local and national Hellenic community," said John T. John, President of Hellenes of the Northwest.

Published by Aegean Press, THE HAND OF ZEUS is distributed throughout the United States and has made an appearance at the 41st Bologna, Italy Children's & Illustrated Book Fair where Greece was the "guest of honor", and the Book Expo America. THE HAND OF ZEUS was also accepted into the International Olympic Academy Library and was available to Olympic athletes from around the world as part of their reading relaxation. THE HAND OF ZEUS can also be found in the American Library in Paris.

Katerina and Aegea Barclay will be conducting readings, book signings, and interactive art events and will actively continue to support events and causes that promote Greek heritage and culture.
